Spiritual awakening. What is it?

Updated: Jul 16, 2020

Awakening is a process of gaining consciousness and awareness. It starts with a deep understanding that our thoughts, our emotions, our vibrations and our actions, are the tools we use to paint the canvas of our lives.

Awakening is a process of gaining consciousness and awareness. It starts with a deep understanding that our thoughts, our emotions, our vibrations and our actions, are the tools we use to paint the canvas of our lives.

“The most vital thing in spiritual life is to be able to watch your mind, to be the observer of your mind, so that the mind is not controlling you.” Also, “Rather than being your thoughts and emotions, be the awareness behind them.”

The magic is in awakening

It is good to begin by observing the mind. The slumbering narrator of your thoughts awakens to realize that he is being observed. This realization only occurs once one slows down and becomes fully present.

Eckart Tolle says: “The most vital thing in spiritual life is to be able to watch your mind, to be the observer of your mind, so that the mind is not controlling you.” Also, “Rather than being your thoughts and emotions, be the awareness behind them.”

But who is the Observer (the awareness) you may ask? The Observer is your higher self. When you awaken, you begin to merge with the higher self and slowly start to loose your identification with the fears and judgements of the ego-mind.

It is as if the observer awakens from the hypnotic trance of the thoughts. He now realizes that the thinking mechanisms of the mind can either serve him or enslave him. By creating a distance and no longer actively engaging in the often disruptive monologue of the mind, the observer finally frees himself. Left to it’s own devices, the untamed mind buzzes with a constant noisy and often abrasive narrative.

But how can we disengage from it?

The key is to realize that we are all in the same boat. We are all struggling with our negative emotions, fears and judgements. This is simply part of the human experience. It helps to know that we are not alone experiencing these things. We are not monsters!

As you begin to have compassion and love for the ego-mind and give up your identification with it, it looses it’s grip over you. The ego-mind looses it’s power and your higher self (your soul, the real you) claims back it’s serenity and poise.

Visualization Exercise:

Close your eyes. Take a deep breath. Imagine a safe and peaceful place inside your mind (a beautiful place in nature or a zen meditation den…) Imagine you are sitting in peaceful contemplation there. Now look at your thoughts and say:

“I am not the thoughts, I am not the mind, I am the soul, I am a vessel of Divine love, Divine light & Divine Power”

Your ego-mind is like a young child that has been abandoned and left to fend for himself. He does not have the tools to navigate adversity peacefully.

Tell the ego mind:

“I’m sorry you are suffering, I see you & I love you. I am in control now, you don’t have to be afraid anymore. You don’t have to be in charge anymore. I will take care of things.

You are safe now. You can surrender and let go, you can relax. I will take care of you’’

As we awaken from the trance of the ego-mind, we begin to perceive the world with a fresh set of eyes. We are also better equipped to correct all the self-defense mechanisms the ego-mind has put in place to navigate a world of irrational fears and self-destructive behaviours. The dreamer is no longer asleep.

Out of this newly gained consciousness, begins a beautiful partnership with your higher self. We learn to surrender to the peace, harmony and ease our inner presence offers. Something magical happens when we do this… It just seems like everything falls into place easily for us. Our immature ego was never fit to be in charge and feels much relief knowing we are now in control. The Observer has begun a Divine partnership that can never lead him astray.

So Ham

Soul Affirmation by Master Choa Kok Sui

To have a better understanding of our true nature and true self it is recommended to recite the Soul Affirmation (So Ham in Sanskrit) in a regular basis, especially in difficult times.

I AM THAT

I AM
I AM not the body.

I AM not the emotions.

I AM not the thoughts.

I AM not the mind.

The mind is just an instrument of the soul.

I Am the Soul.

I AM a spiritual being of Divine intelligence, Divine love and Divine power.

I AM connected and one with my higher soul.

I AM THAT I AM.

I Am one with the Divine Spark within me.

I AM a child of God,
I Am connected with God,
I Am one with God,
I Am one with all.

This is the truth regardless of the capacity of the brain to experience the truth.

I AM THAT I AM.
